Deductibles and Coinsurance Costs Rising

In a chart provided by the Peterson-Kaiser Health System Tracker, you can see that the medical insurance deductibles and coinsurance for employees are growing faster than the costs paid by the insurance carriers:

InsureBlog recently posted the chart as an illustration of how workers are covering more and more of their own healthcare costs.

Shifting the cost sharing to deductibles and coinsurance further adds to the burden on patients.  Deductibles require consumers to pay the full cost of many types of health care procedures before the insurance carriers contribute to the costs.  Between 2006 and 2015, the average deductible for people with employer-provided health coverage rose from $303 to $1,077 according to KFF.

During open enrollment, consumers can shop around with their agent and HR department in order to maximize their healthcare dollars.
