Latest Alzheimer's Research - Mom Was Right, Again!

Oral Hygiene May Be Linked To Alzheimer's

I can hear my 100% Polish mom say in my mind, whenever I am brushing or flossing my teeth, “Brush your teeth, Stevie!”

It used to drive me crazy when I forgot and I had to get back out of bed and brush them!

Now I am really glad she was so persistent. Polish and American Scientist have discovered quite a link:

These latest results show an interesting connection between porphyromonas gingivalis bacterium (which causes gum disease) and the root cause of Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia.

In newly published research, scientists have uncovered evidence of how bacterial toxins stemming from poor oral hygiene can make their way into the brain and may well contribute to the disease, and others like it.

Besides my mom, one of the researchers pointed out, “Oral hygiene is very important throughout our life, not only for having a beautiful smile but also to decrease the risk of many serious diseases.”

Jan Potempa, PhD, DSc, the professor involved in the study explains, “People with genetic risk factors that make them susceptible to rheumatoid arthritis or Alzheimer’s disease should be extremely concerned with preventing gum disease.”

What Can You Do to Avoid It

  • Brush and floss your teeth twice a day. 🦷

  • Don’t let plaque build up. 😀

  • See your dentist at regular intervals, whatever your dentist recommends. 🥼

  • Don’t smoke. It makes gum disease harder to treat. 🚭

  • Have a healthy diet. 🍏

  • Exercise. 🏃‍♀️

That’s it.

Wishing you good health and happy teeth and gums!
